As threatened, I'm posting my brain storm / brain dump for my statement of purpose. Unedited, all I've done is try to make headings. I'm estimating this is about 75% of the basic thoughts that have led me to my decision to attend graduate school in IEP. I divided it into 7 sections. It's a bit long. About 3500 words. Yeah. So it needs to be about 500. Any advice on how to cut, or maybe better what to keep, and in what order the topics should go, would be appreciated and really helpful... I'm actually feeling a bit stuck. Every section seems of utmost importance to me, and my application. How do I cut out 6/7s of it?

statement of purpose brainstorm
For six years I lived a life of hard work, luxury, unbelievable privilege and experiences, working onboard six-star C Cruises. I traveled the world and went on three world cruises, went basically everywhere on this earth that was next to an ocean, and it wasn't enough.

MAKE A SIGNIFICANT, POSITIVE DIFFERENCE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have always felt that the most important purpose in life is to leave the world a better place than you found it, that the world is a better place because you lived. I always dreamed of making an important mark, leaving a lasting legacy (no, too cliche and reminds me of Bill C.).
lessons functions purpose
Some people think it's enough just to take care of yourself well, and to not depend upon others and not to depend upon to resources of society, not to take from others. They feel that is enough of a contribution to the world, and whatever extra is well, extra.
In theory, I suppose I could agree with that, but I worry that everyone in the first world seems to be taking more than their share, and everyone in the developing world feels that they should have just as much as us. So, just to take care of yourself is not enough to maintain the balance of this earth. Some people are going to have to do much more than 'just enough.'
THEATRE, AND WHY SWITCH? MORE TANGIBLE CONTRIBUTION
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I love doing theatre. I love the lifestyle, I love the camraderie and working with people, I love the very tangible result at the end of a few months' of hard work, and hearing the enjoyment, laughter and applause of the audience each night as they see a show for the first time, and renew the show in my eyes. I loved the cruise ship, we had an incredible product, I remain friends with not just many of the crew whom I've worked continuously with for years, but also our guests onboard who regarded us as family. In fact I plan to meet with one of our favorite couples in Boston this week for lunch.
However, I never felt like theatre was enough of a contribution to society for me. Sure, we provide some food for the soul, some intangible benefit. I was always after more tangible results. I suppose that is why I've always enjoyed working backstage, or in design, so I could have something physical to show for my work afterwards, something to point to, take pictures of, and take home to my family and say, THAT's what I did.
And of course if I was working perhaps with disadvantaged youth in some sort of non profit, that would be a good benefit to society. I worked on a luxury cruise, providing entertainment to wealthy guests who could certainly afford to entertain themselves by any means they chose. But I wasn't really helping anyone who couldn't help themselves. And I'd like to help the environment. Because when Mother Nature decides she's had enough and that it's time to help herself, she won't be holding back or pulling any punches. She'll be making her displeasure felt. Some say she already is, with all the weird weather, and increasingly serious disasters.

WHY NOW? WHY ENVIRONMENT?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I lived in Australia where they are experiencing record setting disasters, droughts, hurricanes, whole lakes that have completely dried up. among other things it makes me feel an urgency in the environment that needs to be addressed. And whether or not people believe in humans being the cause of the environmental disasters, I don't think anyone would argue against less waste, less pollution, more efficient energy.
