It's such a nice thing to belong to a library where they know your name and they know your interests and are quick to recommend stuff that you might like. The library here is perfect-- small enough to be a community library, but large enough to have the discretionary funds to purchase anything that they should have. (as in, I've requested probably 10 books in the last year and they've all come.)

Their programming is also A+. They have the usual book club discussions, but also March movie madness of all the recent Oscar winners, extensive computer classes, guest lectures from dignitaries and academics on a variety of subjects including world affairs, art installations, and much more. I've learned a ton from these. It was especially enlightening because we are in a progressive area and so we had events like Ask a Muslim, and Latin American affairs (#ownvoices both times) and the movies last month included a bunch of movies that didn't star white guys (only the last one out of seven. coincidentally also the most disappointing movie imho, though that was unexpected for other reasons.) (Queen of Katwe was by far the best movie, rec for ages 10 and up.)

I know that not all communities are lucky enough to have good, decent libraries, and I think that is a shame because it's really wonderful to have a community center that offers all of these things.

Support your local library! Join a Friends of the Library near you. Even if you don't go. (But really, you should go.) It's a public good that does a LOT of public good.
